World Bank Warns of Cambodian Economic Crisis Amidst Border Closures

The World Bank warns of a deepening crisis in Cambodia, with projections of 1.1 million more people falling into poverty due to rising oil prices and the return of migrant workers from Thailand.

Remittances from Cambodians working abroad have historically been a vital income source for rural families, supporting education, healthcare, and daily expenses. This flow has significantly weakened.

The World Bank's report highlights that a 60% rise in oil prices could increase Cambodia's poverty rate by over 6%. The economy is projected to grow by only 3.6%, with households reducing spending and businesses facing uncertainty.

Beyond immediate economic shocks, Cambodia faces a looming challenge as its working-age population is expected to peak around 2043, requiring significant productivity gains and job creation before the population ages.

The report reiterates that the economic shock is partly due to nearly a million Cambodian workers returning from Thailand after border tensions in 2568 (2025), significantly impacting remittances.

Rising global oil prices, driven by Middle East conflicts, are increasing transportation and production costs, leading to higher prices for goods and services, further straining Cambodian households.

Farmers are identified as a particularly vulnerable group, with increased costs for fuel, fertilizer, and pesticides potentially reducing profits and impacting rural incomes and food security.

Acting Head of State Hun Sen stated that Thailand can close its borders for as long as it wishes, emphasizing Cambodia's focus on reclaiming disputed territories over economic losses.

The prolonged closure of the Thai-Cambodian border, stemming from tensions since 2561 (2018) and continuing to 2569 (2026), has severely impacted Cambodia's economy and livelihoods.
