US Troops Arrive in Middle East Amid Tensions

Over 3,500 U.S. soldiers, including 2,500 Marines, have arrived in the Middle East aboard the USS Tripoli.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the arrival amid military tensions with Iran.

The USS Tripoli will serve as the primary assault ship for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The 31st MEU is an expeditionary force stationed overseas with a base in Okinawa, Japan.

The USS Tripoli is a modern amphibious assault ship capable of carrying F-35 stealth fighters and V-22 Ospreys.

CENTCOM also mentioned the movement of the USS Boxer and other ships with Marines from San Diego.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated the U.S. could defeat Iran without ground troops, but President Trump is prepared for contingencies.

The current troop movement to the Middle East increases the possibility of ground operations.

This deployment follows an incident where 10 U.S. soldiers were injured by missile and drone attacks at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
