In March 2559 (2016), a temple held a ceremony to cast a main Buddha statue and bells, with Nakhon Phonkhon as the main sponsor.
A contractor, Sangkhapan shop, was initially hired for the gold casting but delegated the task to an unknown team of about 10 people.
During the casting, approximately 50 baht of gold was donated by Nakhon Phonkhon and others.
The gold was poured into the mold for the Buddha's relic in front of witnesses.
After casting, the relic was taken to the abbot's kuti to cool overnight.
The casting team took the relic for further decoration for about a week before returning it to the temple.
The relic was then stored in the abbot's kuti.
The relic was displayed twice: once during the Buddha statue's consecration ceremony and again on the anniversary of the donor's death.
Nakhon Phonkhon approached the abbot to melt down the relic to sell for land for the temple, which the abbot agreed to.
Nakhon Phonkhon took the relic to goldsmith NAMO for a percentage check.
Goldsmith NAMO discovered the relic contained only 2% gold, primarily brass and copper.
The abbot filed a police report for both civil and criminal charges.
Casting technician Worapot claimed the donated gold was insufficient to fill the relic mold, so he poured the gold first and then created a brass replica.
Worapot stated he later melted the original gold and poured it inside the brass replica, then sealed it with plaster before returning it to the abbot.
The foundry owner, Sakdichai, denied taking the gold back to his factory.
Police are investigating the incident, questioning the abbot and donor.
Separately, three sacred statues disappeared from a shrine in Buriram and were later found placed outside the shrine.
The statues were moved to the temple's kuti for safekeeping before an upcoming ceremony.
